Chewy Sprinkle Cookies

Birthdays are a call for celebration - especially the milestone ages. And what says celebration more than funfetti/sprinkles? So of course I had to keep Carly's birthday sprinkle treats tradition going for her 18th birthday. I even found a sprinkle-themed card:

I looked through my entire cake batter and funfetti Pinterest board until I found what is probably the most appropriate treat I can bake for Carly: sprinkle cookies. The way the blogger at Pear Tree Kitchen described them, they're basically snickerdoodle cookies but rolled in sprinkles instead of a cinnamon-sugar mixture. For the sprinkles I decided to use jimmies since that's what I have on hand; however, the blogger used nonpareils and said you can use pretty much any kind of sprinkles.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 2 3/4 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 teaspoons Cream of Tartar
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 5 ounces nonpareils (or any type of sprinkle)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together butter, shortening, and sugar, until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the vanilla.
  4. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, stopping to scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl between eggs.
  5. In a small bowl, combine flour, cream of tartar, and baking soda.
  6. Add this mixture to the butter mixture and blend just until combined. Over mixing makes cookies tough. (After mixing everything together I stuck the bowl in the fridge for half an hour to make the dough easier/cleaner to work with)
  7. Place nonpareils in a bowl.
  8. Form cookies into balls and slightly flatten balls into small disks. Roll dough disks in nonpareils and lightly press both sides into nonpareils.
  9. Place on baking sheet about 3 inches apart.
  10. Bake cookies at 400°F for 8 to 12 minutes or until cookies have spread, are puffed slightly, and do not look wet. You should be able to see some of the cookie dough between nonpareils.
  11. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 1 to 2 minutes. Remove cookies from the baking sheet and place onto a cooling rack.
  12. Allow cookies to cool completely before stacking or placing into containers. Any heat left may cause steam and the colors from the nonpareils will stain the other cookies.

I have no idea if she liked them or not because I was the only one who brought more than a card so we didn't watch her open gifts like usual. Haven't gotten a text from her saying if she liked them or not. I hope she liked them though.
